Origins and design
The cemetery opened in 1952 beside the Westhausen housing estate in Frankfurt-Praunheim. Günter Bock and Otto Herbert Hajek designed the ceremonial hall and its 75-metre concrete wall, completed in 1960. Since 1957, 4,788 Italian war dead have rested in a dedicated 3.6-hectare section within the cemetery.
Present-day character
The grounds cover about 22.2 hectares and combine their period of origin with an active municipal cemetery. The 3.6-hectare Cimitero di Guerra Italiano within the grounds is especially distinctive.
Reading the history on site
The cemetery tour links the eastern entrances, ceremonial hall and Italian war cemetery. Burial areas and funeral ceremonies remain sensitive spaces; keep an appropriate distance and observe temporary closures.
